Description
You Would’ve Loved Him is one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written.
It’s a letter to my dad, filled with all the things I wish I’d said while he was still here. It’s about love, loss, regret, gratitude, and learning to live with the space someone leaves behind when they’re gone.
A year after my dad passed away, my son was born. They never got the chance to meet, but I know in my heart they would’ve adored each other. This song is built around that thought — imagining the relationship they never got to have, and wishing I could have seen it for myself.
Written as an intimate piano ballad, every lyric comes from a real place. It’s for anyone who’s lost someone they love, anyone carrying words left unsaid, and anyone trying to keep a memory alive through the stories they tell.
Sometimes the people we miss most never really leave us. They live on in the lessons they taught us, the people we’ve become, and the generations that follow.
Lyrics
Verse 1
The house gets quiet after midnight
That’s when my mind goes back again
To all the talks we never finished
And all the roads that came to an end
I’d trade every mile I’ve travelled
Just to sit with you one more time
Tell you all the things I carried
That never made it past my mind.
Pre-Chorus
Now the years keep moving forward
And somehow I’m still looking back.
Chorus
Dad, can you hear me?
There’s so much I should’ve said
I thought we’d have tomorrow
Now I’m talking to the air instead
And every day I miss you
Every day I wish you were here
Trying to make you proud now
The way you did all those years.
Verse 2
A year after heaven took you
My little boy came into this world
The first time that I held him
I saw your smile before it was his
Sometimes he laughs and I stop breathing
‘Cause for a second you’re in the room
And I know without a question
You would’ve loved him too.
Pre-Chorus
I can see you sitting beside him
Teaching him the things you taught me.
Chorus
Dad, can you hear me?
There’s so much I should’ve said
I thought we’d have tomorrow
Now I’m talking to the air instead
And every day I miss you
Every day I wish you were here
Trying to make you proud now
The way you did all those years.
Bridge
You chased away my monsters
When I was too young to fight
Now I’m standing in your shadow
Trying to be that light
And when my son gets older
I’ll tell him everything I know
About the man who built our family
And loved us more than he could show.
Final Chorus
Dad, can you hear me?
I hope somewhere you understand
Everything you gave me
Still lives inside the man I am
And every day I miss you
Every day I wish you were here
The boy you never got to meet
Would’ve loved you, I swear
Yeah, the boy you never got to meet
Would’ve loved you, I swear.
Outro
So sleep easy, Dad
We’ve got your name down here
Sleep easy, Dad
We’re gonna be alright
Sleep easy, Dad
I love you.
